Every video doesn’t need to be a masterpiece

Posted on May 29, 2020 by Clayton Wehner

The City of Melbourne posted this earlier today…

https://www.facebook.com/cityofmelbourne/videos/679590365936310/

Shot on a mobile phone.

No dialogue.

No branding.

Bit jumpy in places.

Very simple audio track.

But very effective – because it is timely, topical, informational and tells a story.

Some people argue that this sort of product reflects poorly on an organisation’s brand.

I reckon that’s crap.

I don’t think any ‘less’ of the City of Melbourne ‘brand’ for having seen this video.

In fact, I think ‘more’ highly about the City of Melbourne because of its obvious commitment to reconciliation

And they probably produced it in 1-2 hours flat, just for social media.

There’s a place for highly polished video.

There is also a place for much simpler video, too.

Not all of our videos need to be a masterpiece.

Just like Voltaire once said to his junior videographer: ‘producing a perfect video is the enemy of producing a good video’
