I’ve spent the last 5 weeks working feverishly on the new Rundle Mall website and it has now gone live just in time for Christmas. Take a look at http://rundlemall.com.
Faced with the prospect of keeping the old site in place until mid-2016 (due to a variety of factors), I convinced the Rundle Mall Management Team that we could build a new site ‘in-house’ in a little over a month.
And we got there.
This website is not perfect (in fact, no website is) and we still have work to do to optimise the site from a user experience (UX) and search engine optimisation (SEO) perspective. But it is a hell of a lot better than the old site. We’ve chosen to get it out there, even if it’s not perfect – as renowned marketer Seth Godin says: ‘Ship often. Ship lousy stuff, but ship. Ship constantly’.
Here are the highlights:
- The most important thing about the new site: it’s fully responsive, which means that the user experience is optimal across all devices, browsers, and operating systems. The old site was built about 5 years ago for desktop browsers only – the new website is navigable by users on their mobile phones whilst visiting the Rundle Mall precinct, which is particularly important leading into the frenetic Christmas buying season. We’re already seeing significant improvements in bounce rate, time on site, exit rate and average pages per session.
- The new website is powered by the world’s most popular web content management system, WordPress. WordPress is cheap (it’s open source, which means that it is free), simple to use, constantly improved, universally supported and functionally extendable.
- The new website is hosted in the ‘cloud’ at Amazon Web Services’ Sydney data centre. AWS hosting is highly cost effective, secure and easily scalable depending on changing hosting requirements.
- The new website has an attractive, contemporary design and showcases Rundle Mall’s new branding, Unfold Rundle Mall. The new site template was modified from the Sense WordPress theme.
- The new website has new and improved online application forms for Mailing List Subscription, Contact Us, Business Registrations, Concession Stands and Promotions and Events. These forms are powered by Wufoo and integrate with Rundle Mall’s email marketing platform, Mailchimp, and CRM platform, Batchbook.
The new website is integrated with Rundle Mall’s social assets – Facebook Page, Twitter feed, Instagram Page and YouTube Channel – and provides user’s with opportunities to share and comment on contentThe new website has a new and improved Stores and Services Directory, powered by the Business Directory WordPress pluginThe new website has a new and improved Events Calendar, powered by the Time.ly WordPress pluginWith over 90% of traffic to the Rundle Mall website coming from organic search, we’ve set up a detailed 301 redirect scheme to ensure that users are directed to the correct page from search and to ensure that search engine optimisation value is retained.A new consumer email newsletter, Into the Fold, has been launched to coincide with the launch of the website
Thanks to Abby F, Teall P, David H and the rest of the crew at Rundle Mall Management Authority for helping to get the new Rundle Mall website live in such a short space of time. There’s still much to do, but we now have a responsive, user-centric website ‘live’ in time for Christmas.
